These days you can also use it in a browser or on a desktop. The Image Enhancer is one of the main tools on their website — you upload a photo, and the AI tries to make it look better.

Sounds simple enough. But here’s the thing. Making a selfie look better and making a product photo look better are two very different jobs. The AI has to know what it’s looking at to make the right call. So we decided to test Airbrush Photo Enhancer with a bunch of different image types — not just selfies — to find out where it really shines and where it starts to struggle.

We also put the same images through Artguru, which is a newer tool that says it works on all kinds of photos. Here’s what we found.

What does the Airbrush photo enhancer actually do?

You go to airbrush.com/image-enhancer, drop in a photo, and the Airbrush Photo Enhancer runs through it automatically. From what we saw (and what the product page says), it does four main things.

It fixes colors and contrast. The AI tweaks the color balance and bumps up contrast a bit. On faces, this usually looks nice — skin looks warmer, the photo feels brighter.

It sharpens things up. Edges get crisper. Eyebrows look more defined, eyelashes pop more, lip lines get cleaner. On buildings and landscapes, you can see more surface detail too.

It cleans up noise and grain. If your photo is grainy from bad lighting or it’s been saved and re-saved a bunch of times as a JPEG, Airbrush does a decent job smoothing that out. This was actually one of the better things about it.

It can upscale the resolution. You pick between 1X, 2X, or 4X, and there are two modes: “Ultra HD” and “AI Ultra HD.” The AI Ultra HD option gives sharper results but takes a bit longer.

On the product page, they show before-and-after samples for five types of images: portraits, objects, scenery, pets, and text. So it looks like the tool is meant for all kinds of photos. But once we started testing, it became pretty clear that faces are where this AI does its best work.

What we used for testing

We picked six images that cover the kind of stuff people actually need to enhance:

A portrait photo — indoor shot with mixed lighting, slightly soft focus

An old family photo — scanned from a print, faded and grainy

A product shot — white sneaker on a plain white background, taken with a phone

A video call screenshot — low-res, a little blurry

A marketing banner — has text, logos, and a gradient background

We ran every image through Airbrush Photo Enhancer (AI Ultra HD, 2X upscale) and Artguru (default settings, 4X upscale). Both times we used the free web version. No extra editing afterward.

Where Airbrush photo enhancer does its best work

Airbrush is clearly built around portrait editing, and it shows. The portrait came out looking sharper, the skin looked smoother without looking fake, and the eyes had more detail. There was a nice brightness bump too. It felt like a real improvement, not some over-the-top beauty filter.

Old family photos also came out well. The grain got cleaned up nicely, the faded look went away, and you could see more detail in the faces. Colors stayed mostly the same, though contrast got pushed a little harder than we would’ve liked.

And honestly, on every image we tested, the noise cleanup was solid. If your biggest issue is grain or ugly JPEG artifacts, Airbrush handles that well.

Where it felt less suited was on non-portrait content — product photos, screenshots, marketing graphics. That’s not necessarily a flaw. It’s a tool built for faces, and it does that job well. But if you’re working with a mix of image types, it’s worth knowing where its strengths end and looking at what else is out there.

What does Airbrush photo enhancer cost?

Airbrush works on three platforms, and each one is a bit different.

The website (airbrush.com) is free for basic stuff. You don’t even need an account to try the Image Enhancer. But free exports are limited, and you need credits for watermark-free downloads at full resolution.

The desktop app (Airbrush Studio) runs on Windows and Mac. It gives you more tools — retouching, object removal, background swap, filters. But it needs an internet connection to work, even though it’s installed on your computer. And you have to log in.

The mobile app (iOS and Android) is where most people use Airbrush. It’s focused on portrait stuff — skin smoothing, blemish removal, teeth whitening. Pro costs about $8.33 a month or $16.66 a year, depending on where you live.

The whole thing runs on credits. Enhancing one photo costs 1 credit. Fancier features cost more — Video ≤ 1 minute cost 2 credits and Video > 1 minute costs 2 credits or more based on the video length. The big catch: your credits expire at the end of every billing cycle. They don’t carry over.

Artguru: the best alternative to Airbrush photo enhancer

Artguru came from a different direction. It started as an AI art generator and face-swap tool, but has since pivoted to focus squarely on the enhancer space — offering a Photo Enhancer, Image Upscaler, Video Enhancer, and PDF Enhancer under one roof. Its approach is broad within that niche, designed to handle portraits, product photos, landscapes, documents, artwork, anime, and screenshots all through a single platform.

We used the exact same six images to test it.

Portraits. Sharp face, cleaner skin, good color. The results looked natural, and both Artguru and Airbrush delivered solid output here. For portraits, either tool gets the job done.

Old family photos. The grain got cleaned up nicely, and the original warm tone of the photo stayed intact. Artguru kept the image close to how it originally looked — cleaner, but still the same memory.

Product photos. This is where Artguru stood out. The white background stayed white. No color shift. The sneaker’s textures were sharpened evenly — stitching looked real, not exaggerated. For anyone doing e-commerce photography, color accuracy on white backgrounds matters a lot, and Artguru handled it well.

Screenshots. Artguru treated the video call screenshot as a whole image — it sharpened the face, the text, and the UI elements in the background all at once. The result felt balanced. Everything improved together instead of just one part of the frame.

AI artwork. Artguru Image Upscaler bumped the resolution all the way to 8K — beyond the 4K ceiling of its Photo Enhancer — and kept the original colors. The illustration looked the same — just bigger and cleaner. No surprise saturation boost, no contrast shift. If you’ve already spent time getting the color palette right, that matters.

Marketing banner. Text edges stayed clean. The gradient background came through smooth. Logos held their sharpness. And it runs on web, iPhone, and Android.

If you’ve got bigger needs, Artguru has an API too, so developers can plug it straight into their own apps.

Quick comparison table

What we looked at

Airbrush

Artguru

Works best for

Selfies, portraits

All kinds of photos

Max upscale

4X

photo enhancer to 4K (4X), image upscaler to 8K (8X)

Batch processing

Up to 50 at once

Up to 200 at once

Free plan

Limited, needs credits

Limited, no sign-up

Keeps PNG transparency

Not always

Yes

Color accuracy on non-face photos

Optimized for skin tones

Neutral across image types

Text and graphic handling

Photo-first processing

Adapts to content type

Where you can use it

Web, phone, Mac, Windows

Web, phone, Mac, Windows

How you pay

Credits that expire monthly

Free tier + paid options

API for developers

No

Yes

When to pick which tool

If your photos are mostly selfies, headshots, or social media portraits, Airbrush is a solid pick.
